Whither water?
"Water, water everywhere, not a drop to drink." This is an
appropriate quotation these days. "Oh! It's so hot! there is no
water absolutely, we have to ring up for the water taker."
These are comments often heard in the city. Water has become aas
valuable as diamonds. It has become a rare commodity because it
is so scarce.
Every morning while we go on the roads, we see people of all age
groups standing outside their homes with buckets and pots. All
this, and more, for water! Water, always a necessity, has now
become a luxury.
Buying water, queuing up before water tankers was unheard of
earlier. But now this is the reality that people of Chennai face.
Yet, many people do not realise the value of water. As long as
they have water, they are content. They do not care about saving
water, or using it economically. People should be aware of the
situation and the government must take steps to raise awareness
among people.
Rainwater harvesting also must be taken seriously. People should
be educated into using water sparingly. We must realise the
seriousness of the situation.
We now live in the age of the computer. We can shop online, read
books online, and accomplish almost any task online. The time has
come when we can even sit at home and learn driving lessons.
Is it not ironical that with such technological advancement, man
is still unable to solve a simple problem like water scarcity.
