Teddybears and health
KABITA ROY
On October 5, 2000 New Zealand issued a few stamps on child
health. The tradition of New Zealand issuing health stamps goes
back to 1929. Last year, the stamp design featured bears and
dolls.
The 40c and 50c stamps featured a teddy bear. The name teddy bear
is thought to have originated from a cartoon by Clifford Berryman
entitled Drawing the line in Mississippi that appeared in the
Washington Post in November 1902. The $1.80 stamp features
another small bear, one of two identical bears bought in Scotland
before World War II.The 5c surcharge raised from the sale of the
40c and 80c stamps will be donated to the seven New Zealand
children's health camps.
