Dept. store robbed of Rs. 1.12 lakhs
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, AUG. 10. A four-member masked gang robbed the workers of
a department store of Rs. 1.12 lakhs at knife point at Anna
Nagar, II Avenue, on Thursday night.
According to eye-witnesses, the gang which had apparently been
waiting, followed the four employees of Foodworld who were taking
the daily cash collection to the first floor for safe custody.
In a swift operation, they grabbed the cash bag and sped away.
The employees did not offer any resistance out of fear. The
entire operation was well planned and executed with precision.
The JCP (Central) Mrs. George said they had specific clues about
the culprits behind the robbery. They suspected it to be an
`inside job'. Moreover, it was also not clear as to why a door
had been kept open which made the job easier for the criminals,
he said.
There has been a spate of robberies involving autorickshaw gangs
in the city in the last several weeks.
Ironically, earlier in the day, the City Police Commissioner, Mr.
K. Muthukaruppan, said that police had formed special teams to
curb crime in the city.
