Virudhunagar SP appears before SHRC
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, AUG. 10. The Superintendent of Police, Virudhunagar,
today appeared before the State Human Rights Commission in
connection with the complaint of police excesses and harassment
made by the former MLA, Mr. R. Tamaraikkani.
The full bench, consisting of Mr. (Justice) K. Swamidurai, Mr. S.
Sambandham and Dr. M. Sushila Raj, decided to hear the witnesses
at Virudhunagar for three days from September 3.
The former legislator and several other DMK cadres were taken
into preventive custody in the wake of the arrest of the former
Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, on the night of June 29 in
connection with ``flyover scam''.
Taking cognisance of the complaint filed by Mr. Tamaraikkani's
son, the SHRC issued summons to the SP, an inspector and a sub-
inspector asking them to appear before the Commission. The
inspector and the sub-inspector turned up at the last hearing.
The SP, Mr. Maheshwar Dayal, appeared today. The inspector and
the sub-inspector filed their objections. Posting the case for
August 27, the commission asked the complainant to file his
reply, if any, to the police response.
Meanwhile, in the case of `suicide' by Ramesh, a civil contractor
of Annanagar here, the SHRC directed the respondents-the Home
Secretary, the Director-General of Police, the city police
Commissioner and the Deputy Commissioner, Annanagar,-to file
their reply by August 27. The complaint was filed by the former
Health Minister, Mr. Arcot N. Veerasamy.
