FERA case: charges framed against Mallya
NEW DELHI, AUG. 9. A Delhi court today framed charges against Mr.
Vijay Mallya, the Bangalore-based liquor baron, for refusing the
summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with
a FERA violation case.
Appearing before the court of the Additional Chief Metropolitan
Magistrate, Mr. V. K. Maheshwari, the Chairman of the United
Breweries Ltd, Mr. Vijay Mallya, pleaded not guilty and claimed
for trial in the case.
Acting on a complaint of FERA violation, the ED had issued
summons to Mr. Mallya on September 1999.
Rejecting the pleas taken by the defence counsel, the ACMM, Mr.
Maheshwari, said in his order, `` there is prima facie evidence
on the file against the accused to frame a charge for non-
compliance of the summons issued by ED under Sec.40 of the
FERA.'' The court fixed October 1 to begin the trial.
