Robin Dev claims gold

NEW DELHI, AUG. 7. Lightfly Robin Dev won gold medal to lead India to an excellent outing at the Brandenburg Cup junior international boxing tournament, which concluded in Frankfurt on Sunday.

The junior boxers showed immense promise winning nine medals - one gold, three silver and five bronze medals. It was India's best performance ever at this prestigious meet, in which it fielded 12 boxers.

India had won a silver and five bronze medals in the 2000 edition of the event.

Diwaker Prasad, silver medallist in the bantamweight category, had the consolation of being adjudged the best loser of the tournament.

In the 54 kg final against a Russian pugilist, Prasad produced some gutsy performance before losing the bout by a narrow margin. Middleweight Gurmel Singh and lightweight Kulwant Singh were the other silver medal winners.

India's good performance in Germany was a result of 10-day intensive training in the German suburban city of Cottbus, prior to the tournament main.

``It is for the first time that an Indian junior boxer has won a gold medal in an international tournament abroad,'' said the Chief Coach (juniors), Mr. Ravinder Singh Rana, after the team returned from Germany early this morning.

The bronze medal winners were A. L. Lakra (feather), Ashwani Sharma (light-fly), Hardeep Singh (light-middle), Sandeep Dagar (light-heavy) and Harvinder Singh (light-welter).
