Rushmi tames Megha
NEW DELHI, AUG. 7. Rushmi Chakravarti warded off a clutch of
matchpoints in getting past the talented Megha Vakharia 6-7 (7-
9), 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in the first round of the Bangkok University
Open $ 10,000 ITF women's circuit tennis tournament in Thailand
on Tuesday.
Ranked 432 and seeded sixth, the strongly-built Rushmi overcame
the stylish left-hander, ranked a mere 898 on the WTA computer,
with her experience. Rushmi will meet qualifier Chin- Wei Chan of
Chinese Taipei in the pre-quarterfinals.
There was no such luck for the 387th ranked third seed Sai
Jayalakshmy, as she lost to the 541st ranked Remi Tezuka of Japan
3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 1-6 in the first round. The 905th ranked Liza
Pereiera lost 1-6, 5-7 to the seventh-seeded Jin-Hee Kim of Korea
in another first round.
The 609th ranked Sheetal Goutham, who had won the masters title
in the last $ 5000 circuit in India, could not face the challenge
from the 1018th ranked qualifier Donna McIntyre of Australia, and
lost rather tamely at 2-6, 0-6.
