New facilities at airport
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, AUG. 7. A new car park, air-conditioning of the
domestic terminal, vending machines, ice-cream parlours and ATMs
are some of the new facilities being provided at the Begumpet
airport for the travellers' convenience.
In an informal chat with presspersons here on Monday, the Airport
Director, Mr. Bimal K. Srivastava, said the new car park to be
ready next year would have the capacity to hold nearly 300 cars.
Two more hangers for the aircraft and aerobridges are being set
up and the runway length was being increased "within the existing
boundary walls" to accommodate landing of heavy payload jumbos.
The Airport Authority of India (AAI) would be spending close to
Rs. 40 crores for taking up developmental works. About the high
entrance and parking fees being charged at the airport, Mr.
Srivastava said uniform rates throughout the country were fixed
by the AAI with the idea to provide better amenities to the
travellers with the money generated.
The Director admitted that more international flights to the city
meant extra pressure on the infrastructure but the available
space was being put to optimum use. And, what happens when the
international airport comes up at Shamshabad? "The airport would
be shifted," he said.
