Baboor, Soumyadeep advance in contrasting style
By Our Special Correspondent
KOLKATA, AUG. 6. Men's top seed Chetan P. Baboor and second seed
and defending champion Soumyadeep Roy, both of Petroleum Sports
Control Board (PSCB) won through to the semifinals in contrasting
style in the 31st all- India inter-institutional table tennis
championship at the Khudiram Indoor Hall here on Monday.
Baboor, beginning to peak at the right time, struck ominous form
in beating a tentative left-handed eighth seed Sourav Chakraborty
of Railways in straight games. In contrast, Roy, down 1-3, dug
deep into his reserve to win the last three games to quell the
challenge of seventh seed Bhusan Thakur of Railways by four games
to three.
Interestingly. Thakur had beaten Roy in the team championship
final on Sunday to help Railways stop PSCB from winning the
eighth consecutive title.
Challenging Baboor in Tuesday's semifinals would be unseeded
Subham Chowdhury of Railways. Chowdhury stopped fourth seed
Shibaji Dutta of PSCB 4-2. Another unseeded Railway player
Anirban Nandy qualified to meet Roy in the other semifinals by
beating Arup Basak of PSCB 4-0. Nandy had ousted third seed
Subhajit Saha of PSCB in the pre-quarterfinals.
In women's singles, it would be an all PSCB semifinals with top
seed N.R. Indu eliminating eighth seed Anindita Chakraborty of
Railways 4-3. Mantu Ghosh, seed No. 5, who would be Indu's next
opponent, upset M.S. Mythili of PSCB by 4-1. Third seed and
defending champion Mouma Das downed Vishkha Vijay of Bihar 4-2
but had the mortification of losing a game at 0-11. Mouma's
semifinal rival would be seed No. 2 Poulami Ghatak, a fluent
winner over seventh seed Kasturi Chakraborty of Bengal.
Tamil Nadu won the first gold medal of the meet when its mixed
doubles pair of K. Srivatsa Chakravarthy and T. Pradeepa defeated
Jayanta Chandra and Sinjini Mitra of Centre of Excellence,
Kolkata, 17-15, 11-3, 10-12, 11-4.
The top men's doubles team of Deepak Thukral and Vineet Chopra of
Bank Sports Board and third seeded Railway pair of Ranabir Das
and Sourav Chakraborty set up the final clash, while in the
women's final, top seeded team of Poulami Ghatak and Mouma Das of
PSCB would take on third seeded Railway pair of Mamta Prabhu and
Sushmita Roy.
