Karnik named Nasscom President

NEW DELHI, AUG 6. Nasscom today confirmed the appointment of Mr. Kiran Karnik as its new President. He will step into the shoes of the late Dewang Mehta who died in harness.

The much-awaited announcement came after the selection committee's recommendation was unanimously approved by the Nasscom Executive Committee which includes industry leaders such as Mr. Narayanamurthy of Infosys, Mr. Arun Kumar of Hughes Software Systems and Mr. Saurabh Srivastava of Xansa India.

A well known industry figure, Mr. Karnik till recently was the head of operations of Discovery India. He is expected to assume office in September 2001. Speaking on his appointment, the Nasscom Chairman, Mr. Phiroz Vandrevala, said having gained recognition as one of the key figures in the broadcasting sector, Mr. Karnik was the ideal candidate to lead Nasscom in its efforts to develop India as the next IT superpower.

Explaining the choice of Mr. Karnik, Mr. Harish Mehta head of Nasscom selection committee, said the decision was based on four criteria. First, to build Nasscom as an industry institution, second market the India Inc. brand effectively, third to involve Nasscom in a developmental role for the IT industry and lastly build consensus in the industry.
