SHRC cannot probe Ramesh death: respondent
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, AUG. 6. When the National Human Rights Commission is
probing the alleged suicide by Mr. Ramesh, a civil contractor of
Annanagar here, and his family members last month, the State
Human Rights Commission cannot inquire into the same matter. This
was submitted on behalf of the respondents when the SHRC took up
the matter today.
In his complaint to the SHRC, the former Health Minister, Mr.
Arcot N. Veerasamy, said the police had ``intentionally
harassed'' the victims.
He prayed to the Commission that it issue suitable directives and
take action against the police officials concerned.
The Home Secretary, the Director-General of Police, the City
Police Commissioner and the Deputy-Commissioner, Annanagar, have
been cited as respondents. A similar petition was sent to the
NHRC also.
The court adjourned the case to August 10 after seeking a copy of
the petition submitted to the NHRC.
