Water machine

THESE ARE the days of even ordinary people, discussing in detail the various options to get over the problem of water scarcity in the metropolis.

Many of them try to acquaint themselves with intricate aspects of Veeranam, Hogenakkal, and Neyveli schemes.

There has been a demand for using perennially available sea water and treating it for consumption. It is common knowledge that to carry out this process, plants of relatively higher capacity are needed.

Sensing that the current water market has a huge potential, private players have come out with products that operate on the basis of reverse osmosis and could be used by domestic consumers and small scale professional establishments.

One such is Purepro, coming from an American company. It can produce 270 litres a day of purified water provided the TDS level does not exceed 2000 ppm, the company says.

However, even if the TDS mark goes beyond 2000 ppm the machine will be able to treat water but the output will correspondingly go down, according to Surya Water Technologies, the company's representative here, which unveiled the system.

The firm points out that generally TDS level in Chennai's groundwater does not go beyond 2000 ppm.

The cost: Rs. 20,000 but the product promoter claims that the running cost may be 30 paise per litre which is cheaper compared to other categories of purified water marketed - cans, and bubbletops.

The promoter is even trying hire purchase offers. Incidentally, rainwater, which comes free, has the lowest TDS, so try some harvesting if you find this offer too costly.
