Women's hostel for Rohini
By Our Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI, AUG. 2.
The Slum Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has
decided to set up a single working women's hostel at Rohini in
North West Delhi.
With 200 beds and equipped with all modern facilities, the
Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Working Women's Hostel would be the
first such hostel of the civic body.
A resolution in this regard proposed by the Councillor, Mr.
Vijender Kumar, was passed by the Slum Committee at its meeting
here today, which was chaired by the Mayor, Mr. Shanti Desai.
According to Mr. Kumar, the foundation of the hostel would be
laid in October in Sector 16 of Rohini. ``Though there are a few
other working women's hostels in the Capital, this would be the
first one by the civic body. If this is a success we will come
out with more hostels,'' he said.
Arguing that a large number of working women specially those
coming from far-flung areas like Kerala, Tamil Nadu and North
East face difficulties due to the non-availability of safe
accommodation, Mr. Vijender Kumar said there was need to have at
least two working women's hostel in each zone of the Capital.
``This is a small beginning by the MCD in the year of women's
empowerment,'' he said.
The Committee also passed a resolution demanding the Lieutenant
Governor, Mr. Vijai Kapoor, to order an inquiry into the
demolition of a Basti Vikas Kendra of the MCD in Rohini area this
week. ``The DDA must be asked to compensate the damages,'' the
resolution said.
Agitated Councillors said this was a serious issue and if
immediate steps were not taken a number of MCD properties might
be demolished by DDA. Hundreds of toilets are coming up across
the Capital under a Rs. 160 crore Yamuna Action Plan. Also, the
MCD has annual budget of crores of rupees for the Basti Vikas
Kendra.
Mr. Desai said that the matter has been taken up at the highest
level. ``The DDA Vice-Chairman, Mr. P. K. Hota, has assured that
he will reconstruct the Basti Vikas Kendra,'' he said. The
Additional Commissioner, Slum and JJ Department, Mr. Manjit
Singh, has been asked by the Mayor to co-ordinate with the DDA
and ensure that the demolished kendra was rebuilt at the
earliest.
In another resolution, the committee decided to construct a
stadium at the Slum Department land in the Nawada area of South
West Delhi. ``The Nigam Stadium which will now come up in the
next few years will be of great help to the rural people of the
area,'' said the Deputy Mayor, Mr. Rajesh Gehlot.
