Plea for developing Velachery bye-pass road

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, AUG. 2. The Velachery bye-pass road should be developed as any other arterial road.

Though conceptualised as a bye-pass, rapid urban development has resulted in the road cutting across settlements on either side. This was the consensus at a meeting organised by the Institute of Urban Transport today.

Dr. T. Anatharajan, chairman, said parallel service roads would serve to collect, channelise and access the bye-pass at limited intervals. As such, there were over 13 roads leading to the bye- pass and these affected traffic movement.

Mr. Kumar, CMDA Deputy Planner, said CMDA suggested that the 150- ft wide road be developed ``edge to edge''. Referring to the NH bye-pass from Irumbuliyur to Maduravoyal, he said it would be difficult for it to merge with the city network, though the National Highway Authority had provided ` vents' for roads to cut across.

Prof. C. T. Sriramalu, former head, Division of Urban Systems Development, Anna University, said the bye-passes at Poonamallee, Trichi and Madurai were lined by garage sheds on either side.

Dr. V. Shanmuga Sundaram, institute secretary, also spoke.
