Phoolan's security was not scaled down

NEW DELHI, AUG. 2. The Union Home Minister, Mr. L. K. Advani, today emphatically denied in the Rajya Sabha the allegation that the personal security provided to Phoolan Devi had been downgraded by the Government.

Making a statement on the brutal murder of the Samajwadi Party member on July 25 outside her residence barely one km. from Parliament House, Mr. Advani said in 1994, Phoolan Devi had been provided with three plainclothes security officers functioning round-the-clock in three shifts.

In addition, the Uttar Pradesh Government had provided an armed policeman for her security. ``This arrangement continued till the very end,'' he said.

K. Sharan, said today.``All investigations till now by the Delhi and the Uttaranchal police teams suggest that someone else was kept in jail in the place of Pankaj,'' Mr. Sharan told PTI here.
