Viswanath planning another English film
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 30. Mr. Biju Viswanath, city-based
director whose English film, `Deja Vu', has won international
acclaim, plans to begin work on another later this year or next.
`Deja Vu', starring the British actors Paddy Fletcher and Simon
Binns, is being screened at the upcoming Locarno International
Film Festival in Switzerland.
At an Open Forum held at the Sixth Trivandrum International Film
Festival here on Monday, he said the new film, which will have a
murder mystery format, would tell the story of an author
searching for his own self.
Asked why he chose to make films in English, the director said
it was increasingly getting difficult to find producers and
distributors for independent, personal films in Malayalam. ``But
market considerations alone have not forced me to choose English
as the medium. `Deja Vu' and the new film have themes that would
suit a non-Indian language.''
He said the audience response to `Deja Vu' was mixed. ``It drew
praise from unexpected quarters. In the State, some of the art-
house film-makers praised it, while a few commercial directors
ran it down. As you know, everyone can't like a film. Nor can
everyone hate a work of art.''
Mr. George Mathew, director, TIFF, also spoke.
