Rocca begins Pak. visit
ISLAMABAD, JULY 30. The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for
South Asia, Ms. Christina B. Rocca, today kicked off her three-
day visit to Pakistan by holding meetings with the Governor of
the Punjab province in Lahore and later attended a reception here
where she informally met a number of Pakistan's officials and
politicians.
Ms. Rocca, who made a grand entry to Lahore on Sunday by walking
through the Wagah border between India and Pakistan, met the
provincial Punjab Governor, Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Mohammad Safdar,
before she arrived in Islamabad later in the day. Her entry
through the Wagah border was kept a secret till last minute. She
arrived at Amritsar from Kathmandu and then drove down to Wagah.
Official reports here said Gen. Safdar briefed her about the
efforts by the Pakistan military regime to devolve powers to the
local bodies and the progress made in the social sector.
