Bhagyashree, Pallavi in joint lead

VISAKHAPATNAM JULY 28. Bhagyashree Thipsay of IDBI and Pallavi Shah of LIC with four points each were jointly in the lead at the end of the fourth round of the YMCA 28th National `B' chess championship for women here on Saturday.

In the fourth round matches, third-seeded Bhagyashree Thipsay playing black pieces defeated J.E. Kavitha of Tamil Nadu in 35 moves, while fifth seed Pallavi Shah with white pieces prevailed over Krithka Nadig of Maharashtra also in 35 moves.

Top-seeded Anupama Gokhale had a bad day today, registering draws in the third and fourth rounds. In the third round this morning Anupama was held to a draw by the under-14 National champion Eesha Karwade of Maharashtra. In a closed Sicilian defence game the players fought it out on equal terms and eventually the draw came about after 37 moves. In the evening match, Anupama was held to a draw by Sowmya Swaminathan of Tamil Nadu.

Second-seeded Saheli Dhar Barua also lost half point when she had to settle for a draw against M.R. Sangeetha of Tamil Nadu in the third round. In a Kings Indian set up the match progressed to a stage wherein the players seemed to be on even terms and a draw resulted after only 23 moves. However in the evening Saheli chalked up a win against Arpi Shah of Gujarat to stay in the running.

Andhra Pradesh's under seven National champion P. Lakshmi Sahiti also forced a draw against fourth seed Nisha Mohota in the fourth round. Sahiti decided on a Kings Indian defence against the d4 opening of Nisha. After 32 moves with the position seemingly equal, the match ended in a draw.
