Global IT conference from Sept. 13
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, JULY 28. Connect 2001, the international conference and
exhibition here on information technology, communication
technologies and bioinformatics will provide a forum to leverage
the strengths of the State in the sectors.
Scheduled for September 13 and 14 at the Chennai Trade Centre,
the conference organised jointly by the Confederation of Indian
Industry, Southern region (CII-SR) and the Tamil Nadu Government,
would relate developments in the sectors to the user industries.
Seeking to spur the growth of the southern districts by spreading
the IT revolution, it would project the State as an IT-enabled
and preferred IT destination. The exhibition at the Centre from
September 13 to 16 will ``take IT to the masses'' and showcase
the latest trends and developments.
Briefing presspersons here on Friday, Mr. Arun Jain, chairman,
Connect 2001, said experts, from both India and abroad including
the noted economist, Prof. Jeffrey Sachs of Harvard University
(on video) have confirmed their participation that also comprise
a CEO roundtable and sectoral roundtables on IT in user
industries. Emerging trends in IT and bioinformatics, current
trends in IT implementation, IT infrastructure in India, IT and
communication technologies, strategies for growth, future of IT
industry in India, e-governance, tele-medicine, e-banking and e-
tailing are some of the topics to be deliberated at the meet.
Saying that there was continuing commitment to the development of
the sectors, Mr. D. Prakash, IT Secretary, said the need of the
hour was professional and focussed attention on the problems.
Coimbatore pavilion
Our Coimbatore Staff Reporter reports:
A ``Coimbatore Pavilion'' is proposed at the exhibition. So far,
six companies here have agreed to participate, the convener of
the IT panel of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII),
Coimbatore Chapter, Mr. V. Paramasivam, told The Hindu.
In an effort to enhance the awareness among the IT companies here
of quality management, the CII planned to organise a workshop on
quality management certification. There were about 70 companies
here registered with the Software Technology Parks of India
(STPI) and about 50 more were unregistered. Though the number of
new companies was almost static now, the initiatives from the
emerging ones increased significantly. Hence special measures
were taken to ``convert challenges into opportunities'' by the
CII this year.
A team would visit Tokyo later this year as part of the Japan
External Trade Organisation (JETRO) delegation. A visit to China
was also planned.
The proposal for setting up a software technology park in
Coimbatore was discussed recently with the district
administration and the State Government's response was awaited.
