Hooch tragedy: panel orders notice to former CM's secy.

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 28. The Mohan Kumar Commission probing the Kalluvathukkal hooch tragedy has ordered the issue of notice to Mr. P. Sasi, political secretary to the former Chief Minister, Mr. E. K. Nayanar, in a petition seeking to implead him in the case.

The commission, which had its sitting here this morning, passed the order on a petition filed by the prime accused, Mr. Manichan's sister, Ms. Nalini.

The commission heard the arguments on Ms. Nalini's petition. The Special Prosecutor, Ms. Celine Wilfred, argued that the points raised by Ms. Nalini in the complaint do not stand. But the petitioner argued that the complaint has been supported with sufficient evidence and can prove it before the commission. The arguments on the petition would continue.

The affidavit filed by the Taxes and Home Departments has denied the role of public men and officials in the case. The affidavit said that it has not been found that the intervention or help of the Government officials was one of the reasons for the hooch tragedy. But the excise officials in the areas where the tragedy struck have been suspended from service for negligence, the affidavit said.

The commission would hold its next sitting in Ernakulam on August 11.
