11 killed in bus-lorry collision

BANGALORE, JULY 28. Eleven people were killed and over 25
injured, 10 of them seriously, when a Kerala State Road Transport
Corporation bus collided with a lorry near Nidaghatta checkpost
in Maddur Police Station limits in Mandya District on Saturday.
Seven people were killed on the spot and four died on the way to
hospital. A father and his son from Kerala were among them. Nine
victims were in the bus. The other victims, Mr. Manikanta and Mr.
Mari Gowda of Hanur were travelling in the lorry.
Ten people, who were seriously injured, have been admitted to
Sanjay Gandhi Accident Research Institute Hospital, NIMHANS and
St. John's Hospital in Bangalore. Those who suffered minor
injuries are being treated at Maddur Government Hospital.
Police said the bus was bound for Kozhikode from Bangalore. The
incident occurred around 1.00 a.m. when the driver of the lorry,
which was carrying jowar to Ramanagaram in Bangalore Rural
District from Hanur in Chamarajanagar, lost control over the
vehicle after its front tyre burst. The lorry swerved to the
wrong side and the bus collided with it. The impact of the mishap
was such that seven people were crushed to death instantaneously.
The bus driver, Mr. Surendran, who jumped out of the vehicle, had
a miraculous escape. He suffered injuries in his right knee.
Police and the people, who rushed to the spot, put the bus back
on its wheels with the help of a tractor and helped the
passengers come out of it.
The passengers in the bus who were killed are: Ms. Rukminiyamma
(16) of Wayanad, Mr. Mohammed (51) and his son, Mr. Riyaz (25),
of Vengapalli, Mr. Mehaboob (18) of Kannur and Mr. Dileep
Anthony, all from Kerala, and Mr. Hariprakash (38) of Bangalore
and Mr. Sulaiman (58) of Mysore. Two victims were yet to be
identified, police said.
Those admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Accident Research Institute
Hospital were Riyaz (29) of Bangalore, and Ali (40),
Radhakrishnan (28) and Balakrishnan (38) of Kerala. They are in
the intensive care unit. Police said that six others admitted to
the hospital and those in NIMHANS and St. John's Hospital were
out of danger.
The Mandya District in-charge Minister and Minister of State for
Finance, Mr. B. Shivanna, visited the spot and the Maddur
hospital. The Maddur police have registered a case. They are on
the look out for the lorry driver. It is said that some people,
who were travelling in the lorry, are absconding. The Mandya
District Additional Superintendent of Police, Mr. Ravi Kumar
Naik, and other officers visited the spot.
