'Conspiracy behind Phoolan's murder'

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JULY 28. Sher Singh Rana alias Pankaj Singh, the prime suspect in the murder of the Samajwadi Party MP, Phoolan Devi, outside her official residence, was today remanded to 10-day police custody by a Delhi court for interrogation.

The Metropolitan Magistrate, Mr. V. K. Yadav, agreed to a request by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for interrogating Pankaj in custody.

The Crime Branch had so far claimed it to be a case of murder, but the Public Prosecutor (PP), Mr. Irfan Ahmed, submitted that the killing was a conspiracy by Pankaj and his three accomplices.

On the day of the murder, the four met in Roorkee and discussed the strategy before leaving for Delhi in two Maruti cars - one green and the other white.

Mr. Ahmed further submitted that Pankaj used president of the Uttaranchal unit of Eklavya Sena, Ms. Uma Kashyap's proximity with Phoolan Devi to get close to the MP.
