By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JULY 23. The first Franco-American conference on Number Theory, organised by the French and American mathematical societies at Lyon, France, from July 16 to 20, featured more than a dozen special sessions on various mathematical themes.

The American Mathematical Society is the largest professional organisation of mathematicians. France has an outstanding tradition, especially in pure mathematics. But this is the first time that the mathematical societies of the two States have held a joint meet.

Prof. Krishnaswami Alladi, chairman, Department of Mathematics, University of Florida, U.S., gave a talk at the conference on `New weighted Rogers-Ramanujan Partition theorems and their implications', which was a joint work with number theorist Prof. Alexander Berkovich.

The themes discussed at the conference included `commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry', Gauge Theory, Differential Geometric Methods in mathematical Physics, The rules of logic and logic of rules, mathematical methods in financial modelling, geometric methods in low dimensional topology, and the History of Mathematics. Prof. Alladi spoke at the special session on Additive Number theory, organised by Professors Jean-Marc Deshouillers of Bordeaux and Mel Nathanson of New York.
