Manipur students stage demonstration
NEW DELHI, JULY 23. Police today used teargas shells, water
cannons and lathis to disperse around 500 Manipuri students who
were staging a demonstration here demanding withdrawal of
ceasefire in the areas of Manipur and threatening to continue
protests till their demand was met.
Some of the demonstrators were also taken into custody after they
attempted to break the police barricade.
A report from Imphal said normal life was affected in Manipur due
to the 24-hour `general strike' against the ceasefire extension
and residences of some MLAs were attacked despite tight security,
official sources said.
