Funny monologues
THIS COLUMN is for theatre enthusiasts. Mark next weekend in your
organiser. After a significant break in theatre acitivity,
Chennai comes alive once again with Urban Legends I and II on
July 27 and 28.
A joint effort of Explocity.com and Masquerade, Urban Legends I
and II feature monologues and short plays authored by big names
like Christopher Durang, August Wilson, Alan Ayckborn, Alan Ball
and Laura Cunningham.
The `back-to-back' productions are directed by KK, Apsara Walia
and Yog Japee. Day one shows Urban Legends I featuring six
monologues and a `five-o-logue'. The pieces are supposed to be
`funny' and `poignant' and vary from pulpit pieces to political
propaganda.
Urban Legends II, on the other hand consists of four short plays
of ten minute duration each. It is a different fare altogether,
as the essentially urban themes of worrying about one's physique
and exploring the man-woman relationship are set on stage.
In short, the two-day event begins with Ms.Sorken's invitation to
watch theatre and ends with a theorisation of why everyone loves
a dead playwright called Flop Cop.
A note of reassurance: the stage version of Urban Legends is not
going to resemble the screen version- full of gore, stalkers and
repeat thrillers. It will be nothing like what we have recently
seen on the screen. ``These are about us - urbanites, our own
urban legends'', the team says.
Tickets : Rs. 50-daily and Rs.75-for both days, at Landmark,
Odyssey and Crossword. You could also win 10 free tickets every
day upto July 25 by logging onto http://www.explocity.com or
http://chennaitheatre.8m.com.
