Find relief to physical ailments of poor, doctors told
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JULY 21. The Pondicherry Chief Minister, Mr. P.
Shanmugham, today urged the medical practitioners and surgeons to
pay attention to relieving the poor of physical ailments,
particularly the diseases that worried them quite often.
Inaugurating a two-day workshop on `benign anorectal diseases'
organised by the International College of Surgeons (Indian
Section) here, he said a large number of people belonging to the
weaker sections were affected by piles, fistula and fissure.
Dr. R. Sambasiva Rao, Director, JIPMER, in his address, said
holding of a continuing medical education programme as part of
the workshop would be of help to the post-graduate students. With
the mushrooming of private medical colleges and lack of adequate
facilities and specialists to train the students, the conduct of
workshops and special medical education programme for a specific
group of professionals and students was essential.
He said the International College of Surgeons was selecting
topics that were practically relevant. The tele medicine system
introduced in Pondicherry was linking JIPMER with the General
Hospital here.
Dr. D. Thamma Rao, Director of Medical Services, Mr. P. N. Joshi,
Secretary, International College of Surgeons, Dr. R. B. Singh,
treasurer also spoke.
The Chief Minister also released a cassette on the occasion.
Dr. K. P. Singh, convenor, who read out a report on the surgical
education programme and the workshop, said the benign diseases of
the anorectal region were piles, fistula, fissure. The
haemorrhoids or piles and their symptoms were one of the most
common afflictions. There would be a demonstration at the General
Hospital tomorrow on the operative procedures for haemorrhoids,
fistula and fissure.
Nearly 200 surgeons from different parts of the country were
participating in the deliberations.
