CD on Tyagaraja

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JULY 21. A multimedia CD on saint Tyagaraja was released this evening. The CD consists of 108 kritis of the saint with special commentary, text, summary and word-by-word meaning in four languages. Songs in the CD have been sung by expert musicians and supported by graphics. Mr. B.R.C. Iyengar, who worked for over two years to bring out the CD, said the aim was to bring out an encyclopedia on the saint for students, music teachers, musicians and musicologists. It would be useful for posterity as it was comprehensive both in terms of content and entertainment. Mr. P. Obul Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director, Indo-National, said the saint's kritis were not only to be heard but also to be experienced as it was a fusion of spiritualism and music. The CD developers had done a great service to the music world, he said.

Mr. N. Ram, Editor, Frontline, said such efforts deserved support not only from music lovers but also from corporate houses. Such pro-active support from various quarters would enthuse music scholars to come out with more such valuable CDs. Regretting dwindling audience for classical music, he called for a ``soul- searching'' effort to find the cause.

Mr. N. Pattabhi Raman, Director General, Samudri, said the saint, who mastered music, utilised it in devising his kritis.

Mr. Obul Reddy released the CD which was received by Mr. Ram.
