Pak. firing in Kargil continues

SRINAGAR, JULY 21. Pakistani troops opened fire on Indian positions in Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir for the second successive day today, a defence spokesperson said. However, the intensity of the firing had reduced. The firing started around 4 p.m. today and there was no report of any casualty, he said.

Kargil in frontier region of the cold desert of Ladakh witnessed escalated firing, including artillery shelling by Pakistan troops on Friday for the first time after the 1999 Kargil war.

The shelling was heavy and shells landed close to Kargil town and in the general area of Channi Gund south of Kargil and could have caused civilian casualties and grave damage to civilian property, the spokesperson said.

However, police in Kargil maintained that there was no fresh shelling from across the border today. Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fire at 23 places along the international border in Jammu division last night in which a BSF jawan was injured in Akhnoor sector.
