Deve Gowda praises Indian-Americans
By Sridhar Krishnaswami
Washington, JULY 19. The former Prime Minister, Mr. H.D. Deve
Gowda, praised the Indian-American community for their skills,
enterprise and contributions to the local economy and referred to
them as being the prime movers of better relations between the
United States and India.
At a function organised by the Kaveri Kannada Association, he
listed the contributions of the Indian-American community to the
scientific and information technology sectors.
He said Karnataka accounted for 40 per cent of India's exports in
information technology and contributed in a big way to the
foreign exchange reserves of the country.
Mr. Gowda also praised the wide-ranging cultural activities of
the community in the U.S.; in the process, it was keeping Indian
culture alive even if it was on the wane back home.
The former Prime Minister visited the Shiva Vishnu temple in
Greenbelt, Maryland, and admired the architecture and
craftsmanship, saying it exemplified the ``enthusiasm, energy and
hard work'' of the local community.
