By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, JULY 13. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board
officials today briefed the Rajya Sabha Committee on Subordinate
Legislation, chaired by Mr. Khan Ghufran Zahidi, and five other
members of the Committee.
Ms. Sheela Rani Chunkath, Chairperson, TNPCB, welcoming the
Committee, briefed the status of the implementation of the Public
Liability Insurance Act, 1991, enacted for the purpose of
providing immediate relief through Public Liability Insurance to
general public who may be affected by accidents involving
hazardous industries.
She said 104 hazardous handling industries were identified. Dr.
Indrani Chandrasekaran, Director, Ministry of Environment and
Forests, stressed the need to implement the Act.
State Government officials and representatives of insurance
companies participated in the discussions. The committee
suggested having a constant awareness programme to tell the
public of the various relief aspects provided under the Act. No
accidents involving handling of hazardous chemicals notified in
the Act have occurred in Tamil Nadu, necessitating invoking of
insurance payments under the Public Liability Insurance Act, Ms.
Chunkath said.
