Protecting judges

Sir, - It is painful to read about phone call threats and trouble on the road to the Principal Judge, City Civil Court, Chennai, who is hearing the Flyover scam case. It is necessary to provide revolvers to all judicial officers for protecting themselves and their families, with a special provision of power to use the weapon freely whenever necessary for their defence.

People are living under the protection of the Judiciary. If the judicial officers themselves are under threat, what is the fate of the people? And what is the fate of retired judicial officers who have natural enemies in the society. It is the Centre and the Supreme Court which have to take urgent steps to protect the judicial officers so that they can discharge their duties without fear or favour.

Sir, - The judge dealing with `the habeas corpus' petition in the flyover scam case commented, ``can the Tamil Nadu Government playing on sticky wicket take such decisions.''. The Principal Sessions Judge, Chennai, questioned the investigating officer present in the court ``whether any of the accused in the mini- flyover project derived pecuniary advantage.''

Applying the metaphoric description by the Judge of the High Court, I would like to say that the judge plays the role of an umpire in a cricket match. The umpire is not entitled to make any comment while play is in progress on the decisions taken by the rival captains in the match. He has to see only whether the game is played according to the rules.
