Saplings planted on Central College Campus

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JULY 10. Bangalore University has initiated steps to give the historic Central College building, which is over 120 years old, a landscape ``worthy of its heritage'' with the planting of 500 saplings on the Central College Campus to mark Vanamahotsava.

The Vice-Chancellor, Dr. K.Siddappa, said funds had been allocated for restoration of the building and the campus along with the massive afforestation and bio-park programme going on on the 1,200-acre Jnana Bharati Campus.

He said the Central College building, with Rajaji Hall, C.V.Raman Hall and other landmarks, was one of the earliest institutions to be built in the South. Rajaji was a student here, and it was here Sir C.V.Raman first announced to the world his discovery which led to his winning the Nobel Prize.

The Mayor, Ms. Prema Cariappa, who inaugurated the programme, said the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike was keen to be associated with Bangalore University in restoring the City to its former glory as a Garden City. The BMP had already announced the establishment of the Kempe Gowda Adhyayana Kendra in the university.

Dr. Siddappa said the BMP was the first civic body in the country to set up a research centre to study all aspects of Bangalore's history, culture, and its many features as a modern city.

The Registrar of the university, Mr. K.H.Ashwathanarayana Gowda, Mr. G.S.Renukappa, NSS Programme Co-ordinator, and NSS volunteers were present.
