Rs.750-cr. proposal to implement Veeranam project

By T. Ramakrishnan

CHENNAI, JULY 10. The State Government, as part of its renewed initiative to ease water scarcity in Chennai, has come up with a Rs.750-crore proposal to implement the New Veeranam Project.

The scheme, envisaging supply of 180 million litres a day, is to be executed in 18 months, using the Veeranam tank in Cuddalore district as the source. Chennai Metrowater will raise most of the project cost.

Part of the amount required may be given by the State Government as a grant, with the remainder to be mopped up domestically from financial institutions such as the HUDCO, the NHB and the Canara Bank.

This move follows the AIADMK's electoral promise of reviving the Veeranam project.

``We have taken a decision in principle to go ahead and are working out the specifics. A Government Order is likely to be issued shortly'', say sources.

Under the revised proposal, improvement to the source point, in addition to the ongoing measures, will be taken up. A treatment plant will be established at Vadakathur and the processed water supplied to Porur, from where it will be distributed to the city.
