Cathedral of Barcelona
KABITA ROY
Spain's yearly Stamp Exhibition "EXFILNA" is celebrated every
year by issuing a stamp or souvenir sheet to popularise the hobby
of philately. In 1998, on the eve of EXFILNA-98, Spain released a
souvenir-sheet devoted to the Cathedral of Barcelona, coinciding
with the 700th anniversary of its building. In 1298, the
construction of the present Basilica began.
It was built in the new Gothic style introduced into Barcelona by
Franciscan and Dominican monks. Most of the work was carried out
in the 14th century, although its most impressive elements, the
facade and the dome, were not finished till the 19th century.
