Krishna water likely to reach zero point next week
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, JULY. 6. The Krishna water from the Kandaleru reservoir
is expected to reach the zero point early next week, the Local
Administration Minister, Mr. C. Durairaj, said today.
As much as 50 cusecs was released from the reservoir and this had
to flow down more than 150 km to reach the zero point.
The water was likely to reach the zero point by July 10 or 11,
officials said.
The Minister said the Metrowater was discussing the possibility
of transporting the water from the zero point, factoring in the
urgent needs of the city. Depending on the need, water would be
either transported by tankers to the head works or let to flow
through the channels.
He was speaking to presspersons after symbolically turning on the
tap to convey water from the `Mettur' special at Villiwakkam.
Mr.Durairaj said all efforts were being made to ensure that the
city received adequate water supply. More agricultural wells were
being tapped and water was being transported from Erode and
Mettur by rail and from Neyveli by road. ``Finally, we hope that
the rain will arrive to help us out,'' he said.
Today, 487 tankers reached the city from Neyveli, taking the
number of trips to 5273, since the commencement of the process.
From Erode, 16 train loads have arrived in the city, each
carrying 1.5 million litres.
With the arrival of the Mettur water to Chennai, the Metrowater
has been able to meet the deadline set for bringing water from
various sources - Neyveli, Erode and Mettur.
Officials said this was achieved against great odds and with the
cooperation of many agencies such as the Railways, the Neyveli
Lignite Corporation and the Mettur thermal power station.
