Transporters call off stir

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JULY 3. The Twin Cities Transporters Joint Action Committee tonight decided to call off its two-day old bandh in the twin cities. However, a section of the autorickshaw drivers unions which was a part of JAC refused to accept the decision and chose to continue the strike.

The JAC chairman, Mr. Nitin Kumar Shah, told presspersons that following assurances given by officials of the Transport and Traffic Police departments, the goods transport sector, comprising lorry and truck drivers, would resume operations on Wednesday. "The Autorickshaw Drivers Union of Mr. Amanullah Khan which was a part of JAC, however, did not agree to the decision," he said. However, the Autorickshaw Drivers Union affiliated to the AITUC and led by Mr. P. Nageswara Rao announced that they, too, were withdrawing the stir. "Autorickshaws will ply from Wednesday," he said in a separate statement.

The Transport Commissioner, Mr. Malyadri, and the DCP (Traffic), Mr. M.V. Dinakar Prasad, who were present at the press meet, said the JAC agreed to withdraw the strike after an `assurance'. "We have assured the union leaders of a positive approach to their demands and agreed to sit together and go into the specifics," Mr. Malyadri said.
