BJP hails dropping of charges

NEW DELHI, JULY 3. The Bharatiya Janata Party today appreciated the Tamil Nadu Government for dropping the cases against the Union Ministers, Mr. Murasoli Maran and Mr. T.R. Baalu, but said several questions had risen out of the action.

``It is good that the Tamil Nadu Government has withdrawn cases against the Union Ministers following the Centre's directive but still a few questions need to be addressed by the Centre,'' the party general secretary, Ms. Maya Singh said here.

``The way the two Ministers were dealt with, there was no such precedent in independent India and the midnight action against the Ministers and the former Chief Minister did not behove well for the State Government,'' she told reporters.

Ms. Singh alleged that the Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa, ``misused'' her position by taking such action.

``By this action of hers, the Chief Minister also sought to instil fear in the minds of witnesses. Itis a good augury that ultimately the Chief Minister was by and by retracting under pressure from the Central Government.

``In a federal structure States have scope for independent action, though it is not unlimited. It is good that at the end of the day, the State Government has reluctant wisdom to realise the requirements under the federal set-up,'' the party leader, Mr. J.P. Mathur said.

He hoped that ultimately the Centre-State relationship and the democratic functioning within the State would be normalised and ``the DMK and its allies would be free to engage themselves as an emphatic opposition party as required in a democratic country like India.''
