Cadre told to highlight Govt. 'failures'
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, JUNE 30. The APCC president, Mr. M. Satyanarayana Rao,
and the leader of the Congress Legislature Party, Dr. Y.S.
Rajasekhara Reddy, have appealed to party functionaries down the
line to exploit the ``discontent'' among people over the
functioning of the Government and strive for the success of party
candidates in the local body elections.
The four-page appeal signed by the two leaders, sent to PCC
members, MLAs, MPs, ex-MLAs, ex-MPs and other party
functionaries, emphasised the need for unity among party ranks
and listed the ``failures and anti-people'' decisions of the
State Government.
The two leaders contended that the TDP returned to power in 1999
only due to its ``unholy alliance'' with the BJP. In spite of the
electoral reversal, the Congress waged an uncompromising fight
against all ``anti-people '' decisions of the Government.
They said the Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, was
converting the State into ``Runandhra Pradesh'' and not
``Swarnandhra Pradesh.'' Remunerative price was denied to farmers
and they were no takers of the produce. The State ranked No 1 in
farmers' suicides. Power tariffs surpassed house rents. Liquor
was flowing in the State and soon ban on arrack was also likely
to be lifted.
Mr. Rao and Dr. Reddy claimed that regional sentiments were
fuelled by the policies of the Government and Mr. Naidu was
squarely responsible for this. Foundation stones for irrigation
projects were being laid with an eye on the elections.
Janmabhoomi was being projected as panacea for all ailments. The
Panchayat Raj institutions were weakened. The Chief Minister was
trying to hoodwink people by creating ``false hopes.''
They exhorted Congress activists to enlighten the people on these
issues and expose Mr. Naidu in his ``true colours.''
