Second phase of municipal elections on July 8

BANGALORE, JUNE 30. The 4,70,865 voters in the Byatarayanapura,
Dasarahalli, Pattanagere and Bommanahalli city municipal
councils, and those in the Kengeri Town Municipality,
who have witnessed discernible development of civic facilities in
their areas, will elect new teams of councillors in the second
phase of the local body elections on July 8. The polling will be
held between 7 a.m and 5 p.m. on that day.
Speaking to presspersons here today, the Bangalore Urban District
Deputy Commissioner, Mr. D.S.Aswath, said that the district
administration was geared up to conduct peaceful polls in 151
wards of the five local bodies. There were 2,62,982 men and
2,07,883 women, who would cast their votes in 523 polling booths.
An equal number of presiding officers and `D' class employees,
apart from 1,569 polling officers would be named. Senior
officials from the local bodies and police officials were present
at the press conference.
He said the booths were so arranged that none would have more
than 1,200 voters, and no voter would ever need to walk for more
than one km. to cast his vote. The authorities had been
instructed to post anganavadi workers to identify women voters,
if needed.
Mr. Aswath said that to ensure effective supervision, 17 KAS
officers (grade I and grade II) had been appointed as Returning
Officers and Assistant Returning Officers for the four CMCs. For
the Kengeri Town Municipality, the Headquarters Assistant in the
DC's office and the Special Tahsildar would be the Returning
Officers.
He said that helpline centres with telephone numbers had been set
up at eight places to help the public to obtain any information
from the election officers--Bommanahalli and Pattanagere CMCs and
Kengeri Town Municipality (shirastedar): 2213187: Dasarahalli CMC
(shirastedar): 2232526; Byatarayanapura CMC (shirastedar):
8560763 and (manager) :3636677; Bommanahalli CMC (manager):
5732447; Pattanagere CMC (manager): 8601851; Dasarahalli CMC
(manager): 8394909; and Kengeri TMC: 8484216.
Mr. Aswath said that as a special measure, one officer would
visit eight booths for collecting information on July 8. The sale
of liquor was banned in the limits of all these local bodies from
12 p.m. on July 6 to 6 a.m. on July 10. The counting of ballots
would commence at 8 a.m on July 9 at the B.E.L.School, Jalahalli
for Byatarayanapura and Dasarahalli CMCs, the Government High
School, Agara for Bommahalli CMC; the Rajarajeswari School for
Pattanagere; and the Kengeri Educational Institution, Kengeri for
the Kengeri TMC.
The number of candidates in the fray: Congress: 151, BJP: 134,
BSP: 14, JD (U): 28, JD (S): 112, CPI (M): eight and
independents: 364.
