Sampras is the greatest: Agassi
LONDON, JUNE 29. In a rare tribute to his arch-rival, Andre
Agassi said here on Thursday that he was fortunate to have played
in the same era as Pete Sampras.
``He has brought out some of the tennis that I've only dreamt of
playing,'' said the 1992 Wimbledon champion after his second
round victory over Jaime Delgado of Britain.
``We have had matches that have been a credit to the game,'' said
Agassi. ``As great a career as one can possibly have, it still
would be missing something if you don't have that complete anti-
thesis that pushes you further.''
The man who lost in the 1999 final to Sampras said, ``That's
where I feel I've had an incredibly fortunate career. I have had
the opportunity of watching arguably the greatest player, you
know, play. I have faced it many times. It's gotten me to play
levels that, again, I never thought I could play.''
