By Our Sports Reporter

CHENNAI, JUNE 29. The 71st annual day awards ceremony of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here on Friday evening, had a distinct air of a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) function with president, Mr. A.C. Muthiah and secretary, Mr. J.Y. Lele, taking part in the proceedings.

Mr. Muthiah is also the president of TNCA, while Lele had come to Chennai on an invitation from the TNCA. Mr. M.E. Vasu, executive director, Southern Region, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., presided.

India batsman Hemang Badani was named the `Cricketer of the Year', State paceman M.R. Shrinivas, the `Best Collegiate Cricketer', and State batsman S. Vasanth Saravanan, the best `Cricketer from the Districts'. K. Shri Vasudeva Doss (Don Bosco HSS), was the best school cricketer, and Anirudh Srikkanth (Bala Vidya Mandir), the best junior school cricketer.

Mr. Muthiah thanked Mr. Lele for finding time in his busy schedule and added he shared a wonderful rapport with the BCCI secretary. ``India is the only country that has taken such a tough stand on the match-fixing issue, and Lele has been a great support,'' he said.

The BCCI chief noted the very fact that the TNCA was celebrating its 71st annual day meant the occasion was a historic one. Turning to Mr. Vasu, he thanked the IOC for its support to Tamil Nadu cricket. He acknowledged the role of former India captain K. Srikkanth in the revival of the Gopalan Trophy.

Mr. Lele called the TNCA one of the best managed cricket associations in the country and congratulated its ``disciplined and hard working'' members. He dwelt on his fine rapport with Mr. Muthiah and added ``we hope to work together for one more year.''

On the `rotation policy' of the BCCI in the allocation of Tests and one-dayers, he said the move was to ensure that everyone received a fair deal.

Mr. Vasu elaborated on IOC's continued support to sports, and said the organisation now had promising cricketers like Zaheer Khan in its fold. He also talked about IOC supporting leading sportspersons from other sports like Pullela Gopichand (badminton) and Chetan Baboor (table tennis).
