Stereo sets in some MTC express services

By P. Oppili

CHENNAI, JUNE 29. The MTC is modernising its services with some `sound' facilities. Latest is fitting of stereo sets in some of its express services. Eight buses operated from the Adyar bus depot have been fitted with new tape recorders. Enquiries reveal that it was the drivers who had spent money to fit the sets, say MTC officials.

The services having the facility include 29-C (Besant Nagar to Perambur express service - four buses), 21-G (High Court to Tambaram) and 47G (Besant Nagar to Korattur).

In all these services the drivers are youths. They have taken the initiative to provide the facility to the commuters which should be commended, says a senior MTC official.

According to a driver of the 29C express service, when the idea to fit a tape recorder in the bus was mooted, they approached the branch manager of the Adyar depot. After he approved the request, the drivers purchased the sets and fitted it in the vehicle.

The maintenance is taken care of by the crew. In most of the services two drivers operate the same bus in different shifts and share the cost of the stereo set and maintenance.

With the fixing of sets, the services are an instant hit among youths. A group of girls from Adyar specially wait for the service with stereo set. Similar is the case of some of the workers from the Perungudi industrial estate.

The conductors are also happy that they are able to improve the collection in the services.
