Scientists told to lead green revolution campaign
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, JUNE 29. The president, Nutrition Foundation of India,
New Delhi, Dr.C. Gopalan, today appealed to the agriculture
scientists, led by Dr.M.S. Swaminathan, to spearhead a country-
wide extended green revolution campaign to combat micronutrient
deficiency.
Inaugurating a one-day national workshop on ``Alleviating
micronutrient deficiency: Role of horticulture and home gardens''
organised by the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) and
the FAO, Dr. Gopalan emphasised the importance of having more
pulse production programmes with special focus on green leafy
vegetables and fruits.
Regretting that the national level research laboratories were
according low priority to this subject, he suggested to the
Government to set up Horticulture Development Boards on the lines
of the National Diary Development Board to provide the much
required impetus.
Mr. Peter Rosenegger, FAO Representative for India and Bhutan,
regretted that the FAO-assisted pilot project to create hunger
free zones in Tamil Nadu did not take-off because of bureaucratic
wrangles and change of Government in the State.
Prof.M.S. Swaminathan, chairman, MSSRF, called for a concerted
effort to combat micronutrient deficiency and outlined the
significant role played by Dr. Gopalan in addressing this serious
issue.
Prof.P.C. Kesavan, DAE-Homi Bhabha Chair and Executive Director,
MSSRF, elaborated on the role played by the MSSRF in fighting the
micronutrient deficiency.
