New GOC to take charge today

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JUNE 29. Maj. Gen. Anup Singh Jamwal, will take over from Maj. Gen. V.Jayashankar, as General Officer Commanding, ATNKK & G Area, on June 30.

A former Colonel of the Mahar Regiment, Gen. Jayashankar, who retires on that day after an eventful service spanning over four decades, was Chief of Staff of a Corps in the Eastern Command before taking charge here.

He is widely hailed for his contribution to the Officers Training Academy, Chennai, and having raised a Rashtriya Rifles sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

Gen. Jayashankar was Commandant, OTA, between 1997 and 1999, and drew up the blueprint for the expansion of the Academy and was responsible for much of the spade-work to set up a permanent Academy.

After considering various other places in the State and elsewhere, the Army finally zeroed in on the current location of the Academy itself.

During his career, he had held many prestigious Command and Staff appointments, including Brigade Major of a Mountain Brigade, staff appointments at the Army Headquarters, and Chief of Staff of a Corps both in the Western and Eastern sector.

He commanded the 17 Mountain Division with distinction and held an eventful tenure as Commandant, CMP Centre and School, Bangalore.

Gen. Jamwal was promoted and appointed as Chief of Staff of a corps in April 1998. He has also commanded a mountain division.
