dated June 28, 1951: Gwalior Sati incident

The Sati incident at Gwalior on April 17 was talked out in the Madhya Bharat Assembly in Indore on June 26. Both the Congress and Opposition members supported Mr. G. P. Patankar's motion.

Mr. Patnakar said that had the police acted promptly and tactfully in the beginning, the tragedy would have been averted. The anti- social elements took advantage of the situation and excited the religious feelings of the people, he said.

Mr. Sundar Bai Pagnis observed that such incidents reflected badly on the progress of the society and countered the sentimental supporters of the Sati system. She asked whether there was any instance of a husband burning on his wife's pyre.

Reuters centenary

Mr. Kent Cooper, Executive Director of the Associated Press of America, presented an illuminated scroll to Reuters which was due to celebrate its Centenary in July. The presentation was made on June 26, in London at a lunch meeting of the Reuters Board of Directors at which Mr. Cooper was the guest of honour.

Mr. Cooper was welcomed by Lord Rothermere, Chairman of the Newspaper Proprietors' Association who paid a tribute to Mr. Cooper's help in the development of the present Reuters organisation. ``Since the present organisation was created, you have been one of the greatest friends we have had and I believe that but for you, and the help you have so generously given us, we would not be in a position we are now in the world news agency sphere'' Lord Rothermere said.

Mr. Cooper in reply said he knew that the friendship ``between these two great news agencies'' would be lasting. ``We should always enjoy good fellowship as organisations, but in addition we have a great and joint destiny in our service of news to the world. Probably, the greatest thing in my life has been this fine relationship that has now developed during my lifetime between the Associated Press and Reuters.'' He considered his presence at the Reuters Centenary as ``the greatest honour that has ever been given to me.''
