Fire-proof houses for Karaikal proposed
PONDICHERRY, JUNE 27. Mr. A. Anbarasu, Pondicherry Collector said
here today that an expert team from Chennai visited Karaikal to
study the potential for construction of houses which would
withstand any risk of fire and other calamities. The team visited
the site where a fire broke out on Saturday last in which seven
persons were killed.
Mr. Anbarasu said that already contributions from industrialists,
NGOs and members of various institutions and the public for
providing relief to fire victims had touched Rs. 13 lakhs. He
hoped that the contributions would increase further.
A five acre site had been proposed to be used for construction of
the houses. Once this went through well it would be taken as a
model for the whole Union Territory to provide fire proof houses.
Pondicherry would be made a fire free pocket soon he added.
Auction through Internet
Mr. Anbarasu who is also Revenue Secretary said that auction of
licences to sell through retail outlets arrack was done through
Internet.
There was enthusiastic participation by bidders and they included
those participating in the auction from Chennai.
He said that the auction was done in a phased manner and today 13
shops in Pondicherry and one shop in Karaikal were auctioned.
Auction of toddy shop licences would take place day after
tomorrow. There was saving of much expenditure by holding the
auction through Internet.
He hoped that there would be good increase in revenue to the
Exchequer.
