Call for mutual understanding in family

PONDICHERRY, JUNE 26. The Pondicherry Social Welfare Minister, Mr. A. Kasilingam has called for mutual understanding in family so that a peaceful environment could be created for betterment of every individual.

Addressing a meeting of the volunteers of the self-help groups, anganwadi centres and police officers and doctors at the end of a seminar on `domestic violence' organised by Women's Development Corporation and the JIPMER here today he said that the peaceful coexistence of members of the family would contribute to social peace and expedite national development.

Mr. K. Lakshminarayanan, MLA who presided said that drinking was chiefly responsible for atrocities and violence against women.

Ms. Swathanthrakumari Managing Director of the Corporation welcomed those present.

Ms. Nancy Premkumar, Medical Social worker in JIPMER who read out the consensus reached at the seminar said that a helpline to contact authorities could be created so that women facing critical situations in families could get help from the government departments or police.

Steps should be taken to eradicate the arrack as such.

Dr. G. Sesha Babu, a Medical officer from JIPMER earlier explained to the people through a video film the drive against alcohol in some of the districts in Andhra Pradesh and the women's active role to prevent sale and consumption of alcohol there.
