'Centre of Excellence' status for Ayurveda Hospitals

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 27. The Health Minister, Mr. P. Sankaran, today said `Centre of Excellence' status will be accorded to the Government Ayurveda Hospitals functioning in the State capital and Kannur.

Inaugurating a herbal garden and museum of the Ayurveda Research Institute at Poojapura here, Mr. Sankaran said a proposal to this effect will be submitted to the Centre soon.

The Health Minister said all systems of medicine will be given emphasis in the proposed medical university to be set up by the Government in the State. Ayurveda, the indigenous system of medicine, will be given due emphasis, he added.

The Tourism Minister, Prof. K.V. Thomas, releasing the compilation of seminar papers on medicinal plants said Ayurveda will be tapped for the promotion of tourism in the State.

The establishments that offer Ayurveda treatment for tourists will be scientifically classified and promoted through the media and Internet. Steps will be taken to ensure that these establishments provide quality treatment, Prof. Thomas said.

Mr. B. Vijayakumar, MLA, presided over the function. Mr. V.S. Sivakumar, MP, delivered the key-note address. The councillors, Mr. K. Vinu and Mr. K. Maheswaran Nair and the Director of Ayurvedic Medicine, Dr. P. Sankaran Kutty, were among those who attended.
