Procession demanding water supply

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JUNE 27. Inmates of the Seva Chakkara Orphanage near Choolaimedu in North Chennai today took out a procession to the Secretariat and the Metrowater office demanding supply of water for the children.

The orphanage founder and honorary secretary, Mr. A. Velayudham, said with no Metrowater supply for the past two days the children were greatly affected. He urged Metrowater to ensure regular supply. The institution was started in 1986 and today there were 87 inmates, who included orphans, destitute and mentally retarded children, aged persons and children of jail inmates.

He appealed to the Government to grant the orphanage recognition which was pending for seven years. ``If this recognition comes, our water charge will be in the domestic rate and not commercial rate''. With eviction notice issued to them at the current location, he appealed to sponsors for an accommodation within a minimum area of 2,500 square feet.
