Minister seeks status reports on amenities

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JUNE 27. Municipal officials at Pallavaram and Alandur have been asked to prepare status reports on individual streets regarding water supply, lighting, drainage and garbage.

The Social Welfare Minister, Ms. B. Valarmathi, who has been conducting grievance day meetings at the offices of local bodies during weekends, directed the officials to prepare the reports as she was finding it difficult to answer to the complaints of residents.

During the first few meetings, the Minister was seen adopting a go slow attitude, providing ample opportunity for the officials to state their reasons, when residents voiced their problems. However, last week at Alandur, it was a turn around as far as municipal officials were concerned. She insisted on `individual status report' of all the 753 streets of Alandur on water supply, streetlighting, drainage, garbage, even as the officials submitted a proposal for developing the 100ft Road at Lakshmi Nagar to facilitate walkers. A Rs.5-lakh proposal was drafted for laying of tiles on the 40-metre central median space, with 30- metre carriageway on either side of the 600-metre road.

Assuring assistance either through sponsorship or from her constituency development fund, Ms. Valarmathi told the officials that she wanted the status report at the earliest. The report could be a ready reckoner to answer complainants and also for periodical follow-up of progress made on earlier issues, she said.

However, what pleased the residents more was her assurance that no preference need be given to the wards of AIADMK councillors and complaints would be prioritised according to the gravity of the issue.
